Newmarket is unlike anywhere else to learn to drive in this country, for one obvious reason: the horses. Strings of racehorses cross the public roads here every morning, they have priority at the marked horse crossings, and knowing how to approach one calmly is a genuinely local skill.
Beyond that, the town gives you a busy High Street, a lot of angled parking, and quick access to the A14 — a good mix for building up from careful town driving to confident dual carriageway work.

Where you’ll take your test
There is no practical driving test centre in Newmarket itself. Most learners here take their test at Bury St Edmunds, about fifteen miles east along the A14, or at Cambridge if that suits better.
Because you'll almost certainly be tested somewhere other than your home town, lessons deliberately include time on the actual test-centre roads. There's no sense in being brilliant around Exning and unfamiliar with the streets you'll be examined on.
