About UDrive2Day

One instructor, and that’s the point

UDrive2Day isn't a franchise with a rota. When you book lessons, you get Gavin Hale — the same instructor, every week, for as long as it takes. He knows what you did last Tuesday because he was there.

That continuity matters more than it sounds. Learners who get passed between instructors spend a chunk of every changeover re-establishing where they're up to, and often being told to do something a slightly different way. It's frustrating, and it costs hours.

Patient, calm and honest about where you're up to. Those three things, mostly, are the job.

Gavin teaches both manual and automatic, and covers Bury St Edmunds along with Newmarket, Haverhill, Thetford and Stowmarket. Lessons are one-to-one, with pick-up from home, work, school or college.

The approach

Nobody learns well while they're tense. The first job is usually just getting somebody comfortable enough to think clearly — which is why lessons start somewhere quiet and build up rather than throwing you at the Parkway gyratory in hour two.

After that it's structured: controls, then junctions, then roundabouts, then faster roads and independent driving, with manoeuvres woven in. You'll get a straight answer about your progress at the end of every lesson, including when the answer is that you're not ready for a test yet.

Qualifications

Gavin is a fully qualified, DVSA-approved driving instructor. Approved instructors display a green badge in the windscreen — it means they've passed the DVSA's three-part qualifying exam, are checked periodically, and have had an enhanced DBS check.

If you're comparing instructors, that green badge is the thing to look for. A pink badge means a trainee instructor still working towards full qualification, which is legal but different.

Manual or automatic

Choosing which licence to go for

It's the first real decision you'll make, and it's worth making it deliberately.

Pass in a manual

You can drive both manual and automatic cars. That flexibility matters if you'll drive for work, borrow other people's cars, or hire abroad. It usually takes more hours to get there.

Pass in an automatic

You'll hold an automatic-only licence. Often fewer hours to test standard, and a far less frustrating route if clutch control is what's holding you up. More on automatic lessons.
