How it works
Provisional licence to full licence
Three stages, and you'll always know which one you're in.
- Stage 1
Before you start
You'll need a provisional licence and eyesight that meets the standard — reading a number plate at 20 metres. Apply online at GOV.UK from your 15th birthday and nine months; you can drive from 17.
- Stage 2
Learning to drive
We start somewhere quiet and build up: controls, moving off, junctions, roundabouts, then dual carriageways and independent driving. You go at your pace, and you'll know exactly where you're up to after every lesson.
- Stage 3
Test day and beyond
Gavin will tell you honestly when you're ready — not before. You can use his car for the test, and he'll take you out on the roads the examiners actually use around Bury St Edmunds.

Manual or automatic
Take one job away, the rest gets easier
Neither is better than the other. They suit different people, and it's worth choosing on purpose rather than by default.
Learning to drive is really learning to do several things at once — steering, speed, mirrors, road position, other people's mistakes. In a manual there's a clutch and gearbox on top of all of it.
For a lot of learners the gearbox is the bottleneck. They can read a junction perfectly well, but they're still thinking about which gear they're in, so the thinking arrives half a second late.
The trade-off, plainly: pass in an automatic and your licence covers automatic cars only. If you might drive a van for work or borrow family cars, manual keeps every door open.
If you know you'll be driving an automatic or electric car anyway, that restriction costs you nothing at all.
